Golf for Health Classic Raises Over $100,000

2024 Golf for Health Classic

The 17th Annual Golf for Health Classic exceeded its fundraising goals and raised $103,576, all of which will benefit the Southern Coos Health Foundation, in its efforts to support programs, projects and equipment for Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center. This is significantly higher than last year’s event, which raised $78,000 and the 2022 event, which raised $51,000.

This year’s event, held Friday, Sept. 20, and Saturday, Sept. 21, was the biggest ever, with more money raised than at any previous Southern Coos Health Foundation fundraising event. More people attended the event as well. There were 32 teams representing 127 players.

The 17th Annual Golf for Health Classic was listed in the 2024 Top 5 one-day golf events in Oregon, based on gross amount raised, according to golf pros at Bandon Crossings Golf Course.

“We are so pleased with this year’s turnout and with the momentum this annual event has gained,” said Foundation Executive Director Scott McEachern. “It was a beautiful day and golfers enjoyed all of the activities. We are already in the planning stages for next year.”

The events began Friday night with a sponsor recognition reception held in the St. Andrews room at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. This portion of the golf tournament, added three years ago, has quickly become a top social event, with more than 70 people enjoying appetizers, spirits and each other’s company. It’s an opportunity for the Foundation to personally thank sponsors and talk about the Foundation’s impact on the community. A special award was given to Rex and Carla Smith, owners of Bandon Crossings Golf Course, for hosting the event for the past 17 years.

Saturday, the golf scramble began at Bandon Crossings Golf Course with a grab-and-go breakfast and morning putting contest. Registrants headed onto the course at 11 a.m., many determined to win one of the two cups awarded in the tournament: the Magness Cup and the Chivaroli Cup. After golfing, participants were treated to a Mexican fiesta meal prepared by SCHHC Dietary Manager Rita Hamilton, followed by the awards ceremony, afternoon putting contest and the Million Dollar Shot.

The event included celebrity pro PGA golfer Bob Gilder, “Mr. Double Eagle” and his son Bryan Gilder, who attended the tournament for the second year in a row.

Participation in the Golf for Health Classic ensures that Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center stays on the leading edge of medicine and technology. It helps support projects such as the School Nurse Program in the Bandon School District, new Providence Epic Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems implementation, outreach events such as Women’s Health Day and the Drive-Through Flu Shot Clinic, Mary Richards Memorial Scholarships,  and many other worthwhile projects.

“We are grateful for the support of the Bandon community and all of our local and corporate sponsors,” said SCHHC CEO Raymond Hino. “Your support enables us to support important programs that benefit the Bandon and South Coast community.”

Major sponsors of this year’s event include title sponsor Chivaroli & Associates Insurance Services, and DLR Group (Gravel Point project), Parametrix, Perk Development, O’Connor West, and Bandon Old Town Hotel Partners, among 62 other sponsors.

An online silent auction also added to this year’s profits. Many local businesses and individuals donated and the auction raised more than $7,000.
